Esta conexión entre chamanes y robots se establece a través del sufrimiento y el placer. Los rituales de sanación de chamanes y médicos están destinados a disminuir o eliminar el dolor y los tormentos que padecen los humanos y a proporcionarles placer y bienestar. Por su parte, los robots y la inteligencia artificial tienen la misión de reducir la fatiga y las penas que afligen a los humanos cuando trabajan. Pero el problema al que se enfrentan los ingenieros es que las máquinas carecen de sensibilidad, y sin ella parece difícil que exista conciencia. He ahí la paradoja: la conciencia está sustentada en el sufrimiento, pero los humanos estamos empeñados en aliviarlo, o incluso eliminarlo. Los robots de hoy son máquinas insensibles que no sufren, y por ello no parece que puedan tener conciencia. Pero ¿acaso será posible dotarlos de ella en el futuro? Este estimulante ensayo explora el presente y el futuro humano y robótico uniendo las dimensiones biológica y cultural, y es un nuevo paso adelante en las indagaciones multidisciplinares de Roger Bartra.
