Institución fundamental de la cultura artística española, las exposiciones nacionales de Bellas Artes se crearon en 1853 bajo la protección de los poderes públicos con el objetivo de proteger y promover el desarrollo del arte español. En un anterior libro de la misma autora, Historia y crítica de las exposiciones nacionales de Bellas Artes (1901-1915), se analizaban las celebradas entre 1901 y 1915. A pesar del cuestionamiento a que fueron sometidos, el Estado continuó estimulándolos y convocándolos de manera ininterrumpida, mostrando que la institución, lejos de su agotamiento, seguía dando signos de vitalidad como uno de los canales fundamentales de fomento de las Bellas Arte en nuestro país. El presente volumen se centra en los certámenes organizados entre 1917 y 1936. A través de un copioso e inédito material documental y hemerográfico, se aborda en su conjunto el régimen de funcionamiento y los reglamentos por los que se rigieron y se realiza un análisis monográfico de estos acontecimientos histórico-artísticos así como del interés que despertaron entre la crítica especializada, convirtiéndose en un documentos excepcional de las transformaciones que se produjeron en el ámbito artístico español en el primer tercio del siglo XX.
