Introducción a la economía responde a dos necesidades fundamentales. Por un lado, presentar con un lenguaje asequible y unas exposiciones básicas el abanico general de los problemas y planteamientos que forman el cuerpo doctrinal de la economía, lo que proporciona una comprensión integral y un acercamiento mucho más atractivo a la disciplina. Por otro lado, teniendo en cuenta que los nuevos cursos universitarios adaptados al Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior son más reducidos, es necesario que profesores y alumnos desarrollen nuevas prácticas docentes y de aprendizaje. Por esta última razón, el manual proporciona un buen número de recursos (resúmenes, preguntas de repaso, mapas conceptuales, tareas de clase, problemas, actividades, bibliografía básica y complementaria y enlaces en la red) para que los alumnos, además de conocer los conceptos fundamentales y comprender las relaciones económicas esenciales de la materia, puedan también desarrollar de forma independiente otras habilidades y competencias. Ambas circunstancias permiten que el texto sea útil tanto para quienes van a continuar realizando estudios de economía o administración de empresas como para quienes sólo van a realizar un curso introductorio.
