El presente estudio analiza la obra del director sobre el fondo de los estimulantes años veinte, de la Depresión, de la presidencia de Franklin D. Roosevelt y el «New Deal», de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y de la posguerra, hasta el fin del Hollywood clásico. El libro se fija en películas emblemáticas como «Sucedió una noche», «Caballero sin espada» o «¡Qué bello es vivir!», pero también en aquella parte más desconocida de la filmografía del director, con títulos como «The matinee idol», «Mujeres ligeras» o «La amargura del general Yen», y propone, con ello, una interpretación que va más allá de la imagen asociada a Capra como el eterno director de fábulas sobre la buena voluntad del hombre común.
