La Blitzkrieg fue el nombre popular alemán con el que se conoció la doctrina bélica basada en un bombardeo inicial rápido que apoyaba el uso coordinado de fuerzas terrestres desplazadas en conjunto, a la mayor velocidad posible, para golpear con contundencia y sorpresa al enemigo. Hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial, con la incorporación de armas y equipos modernos más eficientes, no se utilizó con eficacia plena. Cuando se puso en marcha, tal y como la habían ideado los generales alemanes, la contundente victoria que consiguieron ante Francia, con un ejército técnica y numéricamente superior, fue la razón principal de que muchos pensaran que la guerra, tal y como se conocía hasta entonces, había sufrido uno de sus mayores cambios.
