Este trabajo es el resultado de más de quince años de viajar por distintos países de Latinoamérica, lo cual nos ha permitido establecer una verdadera red de colaboración entre profesores e investigadores de diferentes centros y universidades. Durante este tiempo hemos podido darnos cuenta de que no existe en toda Latinoamérica un libro divulgativo, a nivel general, sobre la situación y las posibilidades de la piscicultura marina en la región. Con la colaboración de profesores expertos en la materia, españoles y latinos, hemos pretendido elaborar una obra que sirva de consulta tanto a docentes y estudiantes, como a técnicos y futuros inversores. Nuestra intención no es ser exhaustivos, de modo que al hablar de las técnicas de producción de especies interesantes solo presentamos aquellas cuya tecnología ya sobrepasa el nivel de laboratorio y puede llevarse a la industria de manera inmediata, con bastantes visos de ser rentable. La obra está dividida en tres bloques: 1) biofisiología de los teleósteos, con repaso de la actualidad en temas como la reproducción y la alimentación; 2) técnicas de producción generales, y 3) descripción de aquellas especies más y mejor estudiadas desde el punto de vista técnico y que ya pueden llevarse a nivel industrial. No son las mejores, ni posiblemente las más interesantes desde el punto de vista de su rentabilidad, pero sí las que han alcanzado un mayor nivel tecnológico.
