El culto imperial es el conjunto de rituales religiosos realizados en honor del emperador romano y su familia para situarlos en la esfera de lo divino. Pese a su caracterización singular, los rituales relacionados con el emperador no constituyeron nunca un conjunto homogéneo y único al que se plegaran todos los habitantes del Imperio. La heterogeneidad fue la norma en la adoración a los Césares y se mantuvo al menos hasta la adopción del cristianismo como fundamento ideológico y religioso del Estado romano. El culto imperial se presenta así como un fenómeno complejo y multicausal. No obstante, la adoración de los gobernantes del Imperio romano también tuvo unas características comunes que permiten llevar a cabo un estudio global del mismo; un estudio que combina necesariamente una aproximación política y religiosa al fenómeno.
