El contexto socioeconómico en que se ha desarrollado y la evolución de la geología internacional constituyen el marco del relato. En él se analiza el papel que cada persona o sus obras desempeñaron en los distintos momentos históricos y en el progreso de la geología española. El autor, que pertenece a una generación para la cual las publicaciones de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX han sido todavía algo vivo, aporta datos de memoria personal, a partir de la posguerra, que enriquecen la narración.
