Su teoría estremeció al mundo y arrojó nueva luz sobre el origen del hombre. Los 1.250 ejemplares de la primera edición se vendieron el primer día. La batalla entre los creacionistas, partidarios de la inmutabilidad de las especies, y los evolucionistas no tardó en estallar.
