Su título es una metáfora con la que se identifican los valores y las apariencias de la vida humana con un sueño por su brevedad y por lo que tienen de "ilusión" frente a la realidad. Si lo que llamamos vida es un sueño del que solo perdura el recuerdo y en él encontramos incertidumbre, miseria y muerte, Calderón recomienda prestar más atención a la verdadera vida, la eterna, a la que se accede siguiendo los designios de la Providencia mediante la gracia divina. De ahí la invitación a actuar cristianamente y con prudencia porque "no se pierde el hacer bien, ni aún en sueños" y cada uno es responsable de su comportamiento. (Edición de Lourdes Yagüe Olmos)
