Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), agente comercial, espía, periodista y escritor, publicó su primera novela, La vida y las extrañas y sorprendentes aventuras de Robinson Crusoe, marinero de York, a los cincuenta y nueve años, de forma anónima y haciéndolas pasar por auténticas memorias de un náufrago. El libro fue un éxito inmediato -ese mismo año se vendieron seis ediciones en Gran Bretaña, así como incontables ediciones pirata- y se tradujo enseguida a otras lenguas, llegando a convertirse con el paso del tiempo en una obra maestra de la literatura de aventuras y un clásico de la literatura universal. En la época de Defoe existía un intenso tráfico marítimo -única vía de transporte entonces entre continentes-, y el caso de náufragos que habían sobrevivido largo tiempo abandonados a su suerte en una isla desierta no era infrecuente. Al parecer, Defoe basó su relato en la auténtica historia de Alexander Selkirk, un marinero escocés que se había enrolado en 1704 en un galeón capitaneado por el célebre bucanero William Dampier. Selkirk, después de una acalorada discusión con Dampier, pidió él mismo ser abandonado en la pequeña isla de Juan Fernández, a 650 kilómetros de la costa de Valparaíso (Chile), donde sobrevivió cinco años. La presente edición cuenta con la extraordinaria traducción de Julio Cortázar, realizada especialmente para una lujosa edición ilustrada por Carybé y publicada en Buenos Aires en 1945.
