Viaje de estudios, embajada cultural de la República Española...el crucero universitario fue, para todos aquellos que tuvieron la fortuna de tomar parte en él, una experiencia que constituyó un antes y un después en sus vidas, el descubrimiento de un mundo, el sueño de una generación..Arqueólogos, arabistas, poetas, historiadores, arquitectos, lo más granado de tres generaciones de profesores y estudiantes de las universidades españolas tomaron parte en el viaje a las raíces de la cultura mediterránea y de sus civilizaciones. .Durante 45 días, la motonave Ciudad de Cádiz recorrió las costas del Mediterráneo convertida en una universidad flotante, recalando sucesivamente en Túnez, Malta, Egipto, Palestina, Creta, Rodas, la Turquía asiática, Estambul, Grecia, Sicilia, Nápoles y Mallorca..El viaje, realizado en el contexto de una situación política y social agitada, fue promovido por el Ministro de Instrucción Pública y Bellas Artes, Fernando de los Ríos que acometió una profunda transformación de la enseñanza en España. Durante su mandato se impulsaron la Escuela pública y las Misiones Pedagógicas, se crearon el Teatro Universitario y la Universidad de Verano en Santander y se presentó a las Cortes la Ley de Bases para la reforma Universitaria, cuya aprobación se frustró por la caída del Gobierno Azaña. .Para escribir esta obra los autores han examinado fondos inéditos de archivos públicos y privados, y se ha entrevistado a participantes en el crucero y a sus familiares, que han aportado sus recuerdos personales y la documentación privada que conservan del viaje. Tres diarios inéditos han sido cedidos para su publicación íntegra: la exposición racional y noucentista de Jaume Vicens Vives, la alegría de vivir de Gregorio Marañón Moya, y la prosa sentimental, delicada y aguda de Esmeralda Gijón Zapata.
