En De Guancane a Macondo: estudios de literatura hispanoamericana, Rolena Adorno explora una geografía literaria cuyo eje es las crónicas de Indias y cuyos puntos de referencia se ubican en Guancane, una provincia de La Florida española inventada por El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, y Macondo, el conocidísimo pueblo de la novela clásica de Gabriel García Márquez. El carácter ficcional de ambos sitios, creados, sin embargo, sobre la base de profundas realidades históricas, une los legados literarios que Adorno destaca en estas páginas: las propias letras hispanoamericanas coloniales, las reescrituras polémicas y creativas que éstas han suscitado, y sus ocasionales ecos en la novelística latinoamericana contemporánea. La autora estudia también la repercusión de las crónicas en obras históricas en lengua inglesa del siglo XIX, así como el desarrollo de los estudios latinoamericanistas en la academia norteamericana a partir de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Así la metáfora geográfica aludida en el título de este libro posee también una dimensión temporal que va desde el siglo XVI hasta el XX e incluye espacios de reflexión literaria e histórica que abarcan tanto los Estados Unidos como España y América Latina.
