En los siglos II y III se produjo un conflicto ideológico entre dos cristianismos: el apostólico y el gnóstico. Por una parte, se propagaba una interpretación especulativa y ahistórica de la salvación cristiana, con tonos incluso poéticos. Las minorías elitistas gnósticas proponían un Jesús con una revelación distinta a la de los evangelios del siglo I. Por otra parte, crecía la red de iglesias locales que apostaban por un cristianismo apostólico, en el que la encarnación y la cruz ocupaban un lugar preeminente. El pensamiento gnóstico es, probablemente, el desafío intelectual más importante que ha experimentado -y experimenta- el cristianismo en su forma eclesial histórica y actual.
