Aquesta contribució a la història de la lingüística analitza les etapes més determinants i les figures capdavanteres, juntament amb les seves obres principals, de la història de la lingüística catalana durant el segle XX. Comença esmentant quines foren les primeres aportacions gramaticals de rellevància durant els dos segles anteriors, seguit d’una explicació més detallada de la història de la lingüística del català com a llengua romànica a finals del segle XIX a Catalunya i tot seguit en altres àrees de parla catalana. Aquest llibre també destaca els períodes més rellevants i, consegüentment, más prolífics de la lingüística catalana, concretament el primer i darrer quarts del segle XX, a partir de la crida d’Antoni M. Alcover per mitjà de la seva Lletra de convit (1901) fins a la publicació de la Gramàtica del català contemporani (2002). Sempre que els territoris de llengua catalana han gaudit d’un cert grau d’autonomia en temps de pau, els estudis lingüístics han proliferat, de manera que presenta els treballs clau de cada nivell d’anàlisi lingüística, així com, molt esquemàticament, els cada cop més abundants i remarcables projectes que s’estan duent a terme en aquestes primeres dècades del segle XXI.
