SLÆGTEN er et historisk univers, som gennem den fiktive adelsslægt Dane fortæller Danmarkshistorien fra 1000-tallet til vor tid. Dane-slægten møder alle de store personligheder og deltager i krige, intriger og begivenheder, som får afgørende betydning for historiens gang. SLÆGTEN er udviklet af Det Historiske Hus. Reformationen er gennemført, men tiden er endnu præget af striden mellem katolikker og protestanter og kampen mellem religionen og et nyt verdensbillede. Johanne Dane bliver tidligt fascineret af stjernerne og astronomien, og et møde med den karismatiske astronom Tycho Brahe ændrer hendes liv. De to indleder et arbejdsfællesskab, hvor lidenskab og videnskab drives frem af hinanden. Samtidig er Johanne enearving, og videreførelsen af Dane-slægten hviler derfor ene og alene på hendes skuldre. Hun lader sig gifte og får to børn, men drages af det videnskabelige liv på øen Hven, som Tycho Brahe har fået af kong Frederik II. Hvad Tycho Brahe ikke ved, er, at Johanne også er betroet en hemmelig mission af kongen, som har et storpolitisk mål med at etablere et astronomisk observatorium på Hven. Efter Tycho Brahes død i Prag i 1601 står Johanne over for det sidste valg mellem kærligheden til astronomien og loyaliteten over for Tycho Brahe.
