Questo volume è la prima edizione inglese dell'opera di Cesare Brandi. Tra i fondatori e primo direttore dell'Istituto Centrale per il Restauro di Roma, Cesare Brandi è stato il primo a porre in evidenza la centralità e l'importanza delle attività di restauro e conservazione dei manufatti artistici. La sua "Teoria del restauro" è stata pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1963 ed è diventata un punto di riferimento fondamentale nel campo del moderno restauro, non solo tra gli specialisti. Qui è proposta la prima edizione in inglese del testo, recuperando le 40 illustrazioni originali (non più pubblicate dal 1977) e arricchendola di altre 40 nuove foto e dei saggi di Paul Philippot e Giulio Argan.
