Le public ne désire pas l’horreur pourtant il en jouit dans l’art et en souffre dans la vie. Lorsqu’il s’agit d’une monstrueuse union d’abjection et de sublime, la jouissance devient jouissance jamais pacifiée, toujours problématique, souvent irrésolue, qui touche au domaine physiologique si ce n’est pathologique. Une rhétorique des effets que le public connaît bien. Une rhétorique des effets extrêmes qui transforme le spectateur en voyeur ou victime, avec la victime exhibée, qui le transforme en bourreau apathique, lorsque la cruauté se laisse exposer sans réserve. Des regards de l’horreur qui sont jouissance de la limite, jouissance à la limite : le dix-huitième siècle l’enseigne. Un sens de la limite c’est ce que le siècle du bon goût élabore, car représenter l’horreur signifie choisir non pas tellement de l’apprivoiser mais de la rendre encore susceptible de procurer du plaisir. Jeu de limites qui n’en sont pas si elles peuvent faire allusion à un infini dont les traits sont bien souvent ceux du sublime.
