"The flag" by Hong Hee-dam is a story set in Gwangju during that month of May. For ten days, citizens of Gwangju, including laborers and students, calling themselves a "citizen army", and fought against the military sustained by their own taxes. The author presents the pure heart of laborers who help each other and dedicate their lives to the greater cause without expecting any profit or honor in return in clear contrast with the cowardice exhibited by intellectuals. A character in the story argues: Do you remember tho who stayed in the governor's office building complex to the las? You must remember those who took part in this struggle and died. Then, you'll know who makes history -- From back cover.
