Kort voor Pasen 2006 was het Evangelie van Judas voorpaginanieuws. In een wereldwijd uitgezonden documentaire presenteerde National Geographic de 'Codex Tchacos', waarin het Evangelie van Judas. Ook in het NOS-journaal en in een reeks actualiteitenprogramma's kwam de vondst van het Evangelie van Judas uitgebreid aan de orde. Het betrof immers een manuscript waarvan het bestaan al gemeld werd door de oude kerkvaders. Het duurde echter tot 2006 voor een eerste, voorlopige vertaling in de openbaarheid kwam. Eind 2006 volgt een officiële Engeltalige editie. Eerder al verschijnt deze wetenschappelijke Nederlandse vertaling van de hand van prof.dr. J. van Oort, gebaseerd op de Koptische editie die dit voorjaar ter beschikking kwam. Dit boek bevat zowel de vertaling als een uitgebreide toelichting per vertaald tekstdeel of zelfs woord. Het geheel is van een inleiding voorzien waar Van Oort ingaat op de geschiedenis en betekenis van het manuscript. Eerste officiële Nederlandse vertaling, voorzien van kleurenfoto's van de Codex. Prof.dr. J. van Oort is als specialist op het terrein van de patristiek en gnostiek verbonden aan de Universiteit Utrecht en de Radboud Universiteit te Nijmegen. Hij publiceerde een twintigtal boeken en is redacteur van vaktijdschriften en boekenseries op het gebied van het vroege christendom.
