Geflankeerd door haar koppige echtgenoot, een veteraan uit de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog, worstelt Marantha met de ontberingen van het genadeloos geïsoleerde bestaan. De tweede vrouw is Edith, hun geadopteerde dochter, die brandt van ambitie om actrice te worden, maar die door haar vader gedwongen wordt op het eiland te blijven. En dan is er nog Elise Lester, een bibliothecaresse uit New York, die zich in de jaren dertig met haar man op het eiland vestigt en twee dochtertjes krijgt. Het gezin lijkt gelukkig. Maar dan dient de Tweede Wereldoorlog zich aan en is het nog maar de vraag of zij de misère het hoofd kunnen bieden San Miguel is een meeslepende roman verteld in het meesterlijk proza dat we van T.C. Boyle kennen. De eenzaamheid van het eilandbestaan, de weerbarstige natuur en de gevolgen van oorlog vormen de ingrediënten van deze indringende roman.
