In een zucht naar avontuur en aangetrokken door de revolutionaire idealen van Che Guevara, wil de Nederlands-Colombiaanse David Böhm zich aansluiten bij de FARC. Door een speling van het lot komt hij bij het Colombiaanse leger terecht. Hij belandt in een van de bloedigste fasen van een oorlog die al vijftig jaar duurt. David neemt deel aan vele geheime missies tegen de guerrillero's, paramilitaire groepen en drugshandelaren. Twee keer is hij betrokken bij een actie om de in 2002 ontvoerde presidentskandidate Ingrid Betancourt te bevrijden. Als David tot de conclusie komt dat het in deze strijd niet gaat om politieke idealen, maar om geld, drugs en wapens, besluit hij het leger te verlaten en naar Nederland terug te keren.
