Van 1582 tot 1795 was de Hoge Raad de hoogste rechterlijke instantie in Holland, Zeeland en West-Friesland. De Hoge Raad was het enige interprovinciaal gerechtshof, dat bovendien niet uitging van de Generaliteit. Deze PROCESGIDS beschrijft in hoofdlijnen hoe men voor de Hoge Raad in civiele zaken procedeerde, zowel in eerste instantie als in appel. Na een beschrijving van samenstelling, organisatie en bevoegdheden van de Hoge Raad en een korte uitleg over de verschillende soorten procedures met betrekking tot civiele zaken, volgt een stapsgewijze reconstructie van twee processen: 1. de zaak in eerste en laatste aanleg van Amelia van Nieuwaerde tegen de pachters van de duinen en waranden van Brederode over de pacht van het domein en 2. het proces in hoger beroep van Robbrecht de Marigny tegen de voogden van de weeskinderen van Hendrick Duyst over de eindafrekening van bepaalde handelsovereenkomsten.
