　　大海──這塊無邊無際、深不見底的廣闊領域，自古皆是人們未知的深淵。大洪水氾濫的懲罰傳說，正是源自於這塊人類無法征服的海域，自此海洋始終是充滿深不可測的未知恐懼符號，象徵文明社會之前的混亂、更是上帝懲罰與災難的工具。不同於小溪流水，大海不間斷的潮汐與高聳浪潮，破壞了人類試圖留下的痕跡，淹沒了渴望海上航行的水手與眾多旅人，進而形塑了人們對大海的敬畏之情。
當人們對大海的興趣漸增、西方社會開啟世界航海之旅，隨之而來的海洋氣味、惡劣天氣與暈船現象也讓人聞之卻步。十八世紀，隨著科學的進展，他們也逐漸探索海洋的奧秘，了解其對沿海居民的意義，甚至藉此完善了自然科學的研究，探究了地球遙不可及的廣闊歷史。
隨著時間的推移，海岸沙灘成為人們沉思和享樂之地，騎馬、散步、作畫、漫步、紮營、罷工在此隨處可見，起初對海岸的恐懼與敬畏之情逐漸淡化，取而代之的是海洋深遂又神秘的醫療效用──對城市感冒的青年走到陸地的邊緣、跳入海中，精神憂鬱與身體疾病將自然康復！除外，此時興起的浪漫主義風潮，也搭上了追逐海洋的浪潮而起，浪漫主義者在此盡情吸取海洋的渴望，激發靈感、隨興創作，拜倫、雪萊、夏多布里昂等浪漫主義者使海岸成為自我發現與美學的特權之地。
　　從渾沌未開的萬惡深淵，到歡愉明亮的海濱勝地，究竟近代以降的歐洲人如何克服自身的恐懼，投身大海的懷抱，找尋他們身心靈的避風港？柯爾本從聖經的大洪水開始談起，不限於歷史與科學觀，詳盡地從文學、藝術、旅遊與社會角度來討論海洋對人類身體與心靈上的轉變及影響。人們從海洋汲取靈感創作、體驗全新的感官感受，從懼怕到慾望、自我釋放、裸露於海洋。人類對於海洋又愛又恨，恨海難餘辜、愛海濱勝地；愛新鮮海水、恨河港惡臭，這種複雜情感自古交融參雜，演變成今日現代人看待海洋的觀感。
