當人們對大海的興趣漸增、西方社會開啟世界航海之旅,隨之而來的海洋氣味、惡劣天氣與暈船現象也讓人聞之卻步。十八世紀,隨著科學的進展,他們也逐漸探索海洋的奧秘,了解其對沿海居民的意義,甚至藉此完善了自然科學的研究,探究了地球遙不可及的廣闊歷史。
隨著時間的推移,海岸沙灘成為人們沉思和享樂之地,騎馬、散步、作畫、漫步、紮營、罷工在此隨處可見,起初對海岸的恐懼與敬畏之情逐漸淡化,取而代之的是海洋深遂又神秘的醫療效用──對城市感冒的青年走到陸地的邊緣、跳入海中,精神憂鬱與身體疾病將自然康復!除外,此時興起的浪漫主義風潮,也搭上了追逐海洋的浪潮而起,浪漫主義者在此盡情吸取海洋的渴望,激發靈感、隨興創作,拜倫、雪萊、夏多布里昂等浪漫主義者使海岸成為自我發現與美學的特權之地。
  從渾沌未開的萬惡深淵,到歡愉明亮的海濱勝地,究竟近代以降的歐洲人如何克服自身的恐懼,投身大海的懷抱,找尋他們身心靈的避風港?柯爾本從聖經的大洪水開始談起,不限於歷史與科學觀,詳盡地從文學、藝術、旅遊與社會角度來討論海洋對人類身體與心靈上的轉變及影響。人們從海洋汲取靈感創作、體驗全新的感官感受,從懼怕到慾望、自我釋放、裸露於海洋。人類對於海洋又愛又恨,恨海難餘辜、愛海濱勝地;愛新鮮海水、恨河港惡臭,這種複雜情感自古交融參雜,演變成今日現代人看待海洋的觀感。
