印象中，宋朝是一個積貧積弱、很窩囊的小王朝，但本書作者並不這樣認為，他在娓娓講述、條分縷析歷史故事的同時，也提出了一系列新的觀點。他認為：宋是中國歷史上最重要的一個王朝，能夠承先（全盤繼承中華文化）、啟後（對後人起到啟蒙作用）、繼往（建立大一統的王朝）、開來（開創世界近代史的新時代）。他想列舉事實，為宋王朝說幾句公道話，為宋王朝鳴不平。

宋王朝開國之時，幅員不大，兵力不強，不可能像漢唐那樣一開始就向外開拓進取，所以趙匡胤就根據實際情況，訂出了嚴守國境自謀發展的建國大計。為了鼓勵老百姓安心生產，他不能不實行比較寬鬆的政策，以發揮廣大群眾的生產積極性。中國的老百姓是最善良的，統治者只要對他們寬鬆一點，他們就會埋頭苦幹，努力創造財富。在一些遊牧民族所建立的國家裡，在邊疆一些軍閥統治的地方還在熱中於操練兵馬準備搶奪別人財富的時候，宋王朝已經決心實行寬鬆國策，建立和諧社會，努力發展生產，建立經濟強國的道路上大踏步前進。這種思路在一千年前顯然是「超前」的。

一事超前，事事超前，北宋時期，經濟發達，城市繁榮，農業豐產，商品流通，迅速地出現了市民階層，工商業者所創造的財富比重大大增加，推動了科學技術的進步。於是，世界上最早的紙幣（交子、會子）在宋代出現了，羅盤發明了，造船術發展了，大規模的航海貿易開始了，活字印刷和火器都創造出來了。在當時的大科學家沈括的筆下出現了石油，這種在今天被認為是最重要的戰略資源，一千年前已經在為中國人服務了。

這些「超前」事物的出現究竟給當時的中國人造成了什麼影響？其是非功過，一時難以評定，姑置不論。但是宋王朝是一個「超前」事物多得數不清的王朝，是一個豐富多彩的王朝，是一個令人眼花繚亂的王朝，這一點是誰也否認不了的。因此，說宋王朝是「一個超前的王朝」，絕對不錯。
