Description
Based on testimonies and memoirs, studies the experiences of Jewish children who survived World War II in Poland, hiding with Polish Catholic families or in convents. States that relatively few children were saved in Poland (ca. 5,000 out of one million) because of the strong feelings of antisemitism there. Poles who hid Jews were in constant fear of being found out and betrayed by their neighbors, since the Nazis offered rewards for the discovery of Jews and also threatened rescuers with death. Discusses particular cases of children who were hidden with Poles and the different types of problems faced by the children and their rescuers in the cities, the countryside, and the convents. Describes, also, activities of various members of Żegota who saved ca. 2,500 children, mainly in Warsaw. Pp. 182-331 discuss efforts made by various organizations to return the hidden children to Judaism after the war.
