從內容結構看，作者由公訴到檢察再到司法體制最後到法治機理等宏觀問題，這樣就可以把公訴工作和檢察體制放到整個司法體制和依法治國的事業中去考量；從時間跨度看，上至對檢察制度本源的探討，下至對未來之法的展望，當然重點還是放在當下。

▍有問題意識，行文接地氣

過去存在的我們熟悉的法庭場景：一個公訴人經常悶頭完整宣讀完好多頁書面的公訴意見，法官也不好意思打斷，有時公訴人甚至還會在答辯提綱中翻找答辯意見。作者認為，這一看似檢察機關優勢的做法，在以審判為中心的訴訟制度改革背景下，已經成為一種劣勢，鑒於此，公訴人應提倡和鍛鍊即席發言。與此同時，他也肯定和表揚了另一些公訴人好的做法，如尊重被告人、重視溝通理性、平和有耐心等。

▍從司法規律出發，不迷信權威

針對有人提出起訴書宜簡潔，甚至有知名專家主張「一句話起訴書」，作者認為，「一句話起訴書」體現了偵查中心主義下的庭審形式化和效率優先原則，隨著庭審實質化程度的加強，起訴書應該追求的核心目標是敘述性。如果說判決書要把「理」說清楚，那麼起訴書就是要把「事」說清楚。對於起訴書的篇幅來講，應該服從敘述性的充分展開，「事」沒說清楚，不能停筆。

▍尊重人性，弘揚人性

書中隨處可見人性字眼或與人性相關的表述，如作者提出，公訴人首先是人，是人就要有人情味，所謂不忘初心，公訴人的初心就是人性；司法規律與人性規律相通，人性是法治信號的強化器。從此出發，作者呼籲重視被告人的認罪悔罪，也對冤假錯案的釀成表現出無盡的痛。機械理性的執法方式只是司法倫理的最低水準，只有傾注情感，才能閃爍人性光輝。
