呂碧城被譽為「近三百年來最後一位女詞人」，她辦過女校、當過袁世凱的秘書。由於早年投資有道，為呂碧城累積了不少財富，得以支持她過著自由、安逸的生活。1926～33年間，呂碧城飄洋過海，足跡遍及美、英、法、德、義、奧、瑞士。她把所見所聞、風土人情寫成〈鴻雪因緣〉，連載於京滬的報章雜誌，後結集成書《歐美漫遊錄》。 
作為「國人之嚮導」，呂碧城的遊記提供了不少實際的旅行資訊，如訂票、海關、行李、銀行、旅館、小費等等，均以自身經驗為例說明：在倫敦吃日本火鍋，一盤十片薄薄的豆腐要多少錢？柏林的華人餐館在哪裡？紐約電車上吐痰一口罰金是多少？從威尼斯到維也納乘飛機會比坐火車的時間快多少？還羅列必到的名勝古蹟，其景點與歷史背景。《歐美漫遊錄》無異於1920年代的旅遊指南，分享了一個女子的獨遊心得。 
在這個「狂囂的年代」，有聲電影誕生了，女性剪鮑伯頭、開車抽菸，呂碧城的遊記也捕捉了這時代的絢爛：寶光璀璨的紅磨坊、舉國若狂的巴黎女皇選舉、巨星宅墅薈萃的好萊塢比佛利山、不啻皇居的郵輪奧林匹克號、英國「少女選舉權」剛通過⋯⋯。 

那時沒有寂寞星球、沒有Google Map，也還沒有數位相機。呂碧城，這位民初才女走出閨閣，一只皮箱隻身重洋，走走停停隨心所欲，漫遊於異域與心靈之間。
