斯特凡．褚威格（Stefan Zweig, 1881-1942），富有的奧地利公民，到處為家、居無定所的猶太人，著作等身的作家，泛歐人道主義不倦的提倡者，愛結交朋友者，崇高的反戰主義者，愛狗者，厭貓者，愛拈花惹草者，向男人拋媚眼者，面對年老的摧殘而變得卑怯者，面對神祕的死亡而鎮定自若者——褚威格屬於體現所在環境之魅力與腐化的那類人。 
一九三○年代，斯特凡．褚威格已是世界上作品被譯成最多國語言的在世作家。他的長短篇小說和傳記引人入勝，一推出即暢銷。褚威格也是個知識分子，各種雅俗藝術的愛好者。但希特勒掌權後，這位大力提倡國際人道主義的名作家，才幾年光景就落入日益孤立的流亡生活。從倫敦到巴思到紐約市，再到奧辛寧、里約，最後落腳巴西貝德羅保利斯，然後於一九四二年，在該地一狹仄的平房裡，與妻子自殺了結一生。 
褚威格曾被形容為「人類靈魂裡永遠的旅人」，流亡不只是政治、地理上，也是自我存在上、心理上的放逐，可能早在故鄉時他的自我放逐已然開始。褚威格認為他們那一代會像以色列的孩子那樣消逝，在沙漠裡漫無目的地徘徊，始終看不到應許之地。他嘆道：「怎麼看我們都是被擺錯地方。」
