Por diversas causas, hoy se ha sustituido la noción de sexo por la de género presentándolo como elegible, al gusto o las inclinaciones de cada cual. En algunos sectores el género se ha ideologizado y para quienes desean tener una visión realista de la vida incluso la noción de género está bajo sospecha, pues no se sabe a ciencia cierta qué se quiere decir con ella. Aquí se entenderá el género en su genuino sentido: el desarrollo cultural del sexo. Abordaré brevemente los modelos de género −es decir, de las relaciones entre varones y mujeres−, que se pueden detectar a lo largo de la historia, modelos que coexisten contemporáneamente dentro de nuestras sociedades, cada vez más multiculturales. Concluiré planteando la necesidad de crear un nuevo modelo que conjugue adecuadamente igualdad y diferencia, teniendo en cuenta que el criterio para valorarlos tanto en la teoría como en la praxis, es siempre la dignidad humana.
