저자 토리 텔퍼는 유럽 중세 시대 헝가리의 백작 부인 바토리 에르제베트를 비롯하여 내니 도스, 매리 앤 코튼, 다리야 니콜라예브나 살티코바, 안나 마리 한, 틸리 클래맥 등 역사에 실존했으나 거의 잊혀지다시피한 여성 연쇄살인범들을 풍부한 사료 조사와 최신 연구를 바탕으로 수천 가지의 작은 사실들을 발굴하고 검증함으로써 완성도 높은 논픽션을 만들어 냈다.
