2087 is a sequel to 2085. In 2085, a liberal president, Randolf Beale, planned to nationalize GRS Corporation, manufacturer of the autonomous humanoid robots that constituted the United States military and performed so much of the labor of the nation.Mark Girard, son of Arthur Girard, the super-intelligent inventor of the autonomous robot brain, was president of GRS Corporation and decided to resist the government takeover. Using a capability secretly built into all GRS robots, he commanded an army unit to take over the United States government. He then formed the new government, a dictatorship, with an autonomous robot named Abraham as Chief Executive. The government had become a benevolent tyranny, incorruptible and fair according to the law. In it, Mark was a consultant to Abraham, but the robot held all authority. Arthur Girard was very old and failing, but still perhaps the most brilliant man of all time. He had radical and heartless ideas about improving mankind - by eliminating those he didn't like -- and with a huge personal fortune, had the means to carry them out, aided by the fact that he secretly controlled Abraham without Mark's knowledge. As he felt his death was approaching, he decided to gamble on expensive but very risky treatments which could rejuvenate him. He survived them, but felt encouraged to carry out his plans to, in his estimation, put mankind back onto a proper evolutionary track. Arthur staged his fake death and disappeared, but soon after unleashed devastation on the world.
