John William Palidori's "The Vampyre" tells the story of a vampire named Lord Ruthven who meets an Englishman named Aubrey, and travels across Europe on a quest of seduction and blood lust. Ruthven meets Aubrey at various parties around London. Ruthven is pale, mysterious, and scholarly, while Aubrey is charismatic, intelligent, and adventurous. When they make their way to Italy, Ruthven reveals to Aubrey his plan to seduce the daughter of a countess. Aubrey heeds a letter that warns him to be careful around Ruthven. He then warns the countess about Ruthven's intentions before leaving.
