Playing for Change is a book written for grades 4-6. It tells the story of Carl Erskine, who pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers during the era when Jackie Robinson broke the Major League Baseball color barrier. After retirement from baseball, Carl returned to his hometown of Anderson (Indiana) where he and his wife Betty had their fourth child - Jimmy - who had Down Syndrome.At the request of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Carl became a lead spokesperson for a new organization known as Special Olympics. These stories feature parallels between the fight for racial justice and campaign for seek inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities into society.The book is written by Kelly Brown, and beautifully illustrated by Indianapolis artist Johnson Simon.Playing for Change illustrates two of the greatest social changes in recent American history, as seen through the life of a man who had a front row seat to both. The book is complementary to a set of educational lessons known as the Erskine Personal Impact Curriculum (EPIC).
