The hillfort is univallate, consisting of a massive bank and external ditch and a counterscarp bank to the east of original entrances to the south and the north, through which the modern and very busy B3180 road passes.
Dividing the book into two parts, Tilley first explores the prehistoric landscape from the Mesolithic to the end of the Iron Age, and follows with an analysis of the same landscape from the eighteenth into the twenty-first century.
