This book is divided into two major parts. Part One examines meetings as they occur today in most organisations. This in-depth analysis of current meeting practices will help the reader to more easily implement needed changes and techniques. Chapter 1 gives some indication as to why business meetings have become so ineffective. Chapter 2 introduces a new way of understanding business meetings through analysing the kind of information processing which occurs in the typical business meeting. Chapter 3 and 4 examine what is known about how groups work together and what factors have a primary influence on the functioning of work groups. Part Two focuses specifically on what the reader can do to have more effective meetings which take less time. Fundamentals of meeting planning are presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 discusses leadership in business meetings and explains how effective leadership can and should be a shared activity, a theme which is continued in Chapter 7, 'The Participant's Role in Business Meetings.' Chapter 8 looks at the meeting environments of the future, including high-technology influences on modern business meetings such as electronic and video conferences. Special meeting formats and leadership styles are discussed in the appendices. A Meeting Planners' Packet is also included for ready reference in helping the readers incorporate ideas from the book into their own meeting practices.
