Maria Lina Schweizer (*25. November 1893; †2. Mai 1920), gelernte Krankenschwester und Tochter eines Pfarrers, reiste als Schwester der Basler Mission nach China. Als Verfasserin der in diesem Buch publizierten Briefe, einem faszinierenden Reisebericht aus dem Jahr 1920, ist sie Co-Autorin und Erzählerin der Geschichte. Diese Briefe stellen eindrückliche Zeitdokumente einer langen Reise einer Gruppe von Missionsmitarbeitenden nach China dar. Wie man sich gut vorstellen kann, war eine solche Reise damals deutlich abenteuerlicher und anstrengender als heute. Marias lebhafter Schreibstil und ihre ausgeprägte Beobachtungsgabe, gibt einen tiefen Einblick in eine vergangene Zeit und das beschwerliche Reisen von damals. Die Gruppe von Missionaren reiste von Basel nach Genua, von dort mit einem Dampfer übers Mittelmeer und den Atlantik nach New York. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in dieser Metropole ging es mit der Eisenbahn quer durch die USA nach San Francisco und danach mit einem weiteren Dampfer quer über den Pazifik nach Hong Kong. Die letzte Etappe führte mittels einer Flussreise nach Kayintschu (dem heutigen Meizhou) in der süd-chinesischen Provinz Guangdong. Der Reisebericht ist eingebettet in interessante und aufschlussreiche Details rund um die Geschehnisse: Karten, Bilder, Analysen, etc.
