In der Dominikanischen Republik hat die Knappheit an kultivierbarem und fruchtbarem Land in tieferen Lagen ein Vordringen des landwirtschaftlichen Anbaus in die ökologisch labileren Gebirgsregionen mit besonders erosions- und degradationsgefährdeten Böden nach sich gezogen. Gerade auf diesen marginalen Standorten wird der nachhaltige Umgang mit den natürlichen Ressourcen mittel- und langfristig überlebensnotwendig und somit entscheidend für die Zukunft bäuerlichen Wirtschaftens sein. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde der Landnutzungswandel im oberen Einzugsgebiet des Río Yaque del Norte exemplarisch für eine Gebirgsregion in den Tropen analysiert. Auf Grundlage multitemporaler Satellitenbilder wurde unter Einbezug von Luftbildern und Geländedaten die Landnutzung klassifiziert und eine Karte erstellt, welche für die Klassen vegetationsfreie Fläche, Wald, Agroforst und Landwirtschaft die Veränderung in dem Zeitraum von 1986 bis 2000 beschreibt.
