Die Grand Tour war unterbrochen, Post- und Reisewege gefährlich. Das Genfer Magazin der Bibliothèque britannique organisierte während der Kriege die internationale Diskussion um die Natur der Wärme, und die Geologen verwandelten mit empfindlichen Messgeräten die Atmosphäre, die Höhe der Berge, die Sonneneinstrahlung, die Temperatur der Gletscher oder die Fließgeschwindigkeit der Lava in ein Zahlenwerk, mit dem sie im heimischen Labor und in den Schmelzöfen der Industrie die Natur simulierten – die Geburt der Geologie als Wissenschaft.
