O presente livro pretende demonstrar de que forma a justificação existente na teoria de Rawls é do tipo coerentista, ou seja, aquela que é possível sem pressuposição antecedente de um acordo sobre normas sociais específicas. Sob a perspectiva metodológica de tal investigação, tratar-se-á do caráter não inferencial e, por conseguinte, da não conexão causal como característica distintiva no coerentismo emergente em relação às teorias fundacionistas, isso oportunizando mostrar a impossibilidade da existência de crenças básicas na justiça como equidade e a característica que afirma a presença de um suporte mútuo entre as crenças através do mecanismo da posição original enquanto recurso procedimental e do equilíbrio reflexivo amplo, o qual proporciona às crenças um processo dinâmico que ocorre no interior da posição original. Este fato está relacionado com uma das principais características da justificação coerentista do tipo emergente, porquanto no equilíbrio reflexivo amplo há avanços e recuos, em se tratando dos princípios, juízos considerados e as teorias do pano de fundo (background), alcançando, assim, uma coerência reflexiva. Nesse sentido, aqui utilizaremos os termos coerência e equilíbrio como sinônimos. Embora Rawls não mencione em nenhum de seus textos tal postura, é possível constatar este aspecto em sua teoria. Isto porque os critérios de justificativas encontram-se subjacentes à construção da sua teoria da justiça como equidade expressas pelas seguintes ideias: (i) só as crenças podem justificar outras crenças, e nada, além disso, pode contribuir para uma justificação; (ii) todas as crenças justificadas dependem de outras crenças para a sua justificação.
