Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer nació en Sevilla en 1836 y murió en Madrid en 1870. La lectura de los grandes poetas románticos despertó muy pronto su vocación literaria, que siempre compaginó con un vivo interés por el mundo del arte. A los dieciocho años, abandonando sus estudios de pintura, Bécquer se trasladó a Madrid, paso obligado para abrirse camino en la literatura. Fueron años difíciles en los que tuvo que recurrir a colaboraciones en la prensa y a las adaptaciones teatrales para subsistir, ya que no llegó a ver sus obras editadas. Este volumen ofrece reunidas las RIMAS y una selección de LEYENDAS en una nueva edición prologada, anotada y comentada por Francisco López Estrada y M.a Teresa López García-Berdoy. La aparente sencillez de la poesía de Bécquer frente a la variedad de recursos estilísticos que maneja; la comunidad de motivos que animan su prosa y su verso; el amor, la tradición; las fuentes literarias en las el poeta se inspiró; la depuración que realizó de la creación romántica procedente y su apertura hacia nuevos ideales literarios son algunas de las cuestiones que aborda esta edición de la obra del poeta más representativo del Romanticismo español.
